Description

Contemporary image of the Deer Isle Bridge connecting Sedgwick with Little Deer Isle, Maine, completed by the Public Works Administration (PWA) under FDR's administration in 1939. To accommodate navigation by high masted sailing vessels, the center of the span rises 98.7 feet above the mean water level in Eggmoggin Reach. This is part of the famous "Western Way" cruising ground popular among American yachtsmen as well as fishermen navigating these waters. On August 14, 1941, returning from the Atlantic Conference in Newfoundland in the Presidential Yacht USS Potomac, FDR anchored for the night in a nearby cove, where they purchased lobsters and borrowed a newspaper from a passing fisherman. Eggmoggin Reach was considered to provide a safe from enemy submarines.
