Subject

Laura Delano Adams, Ellen Delano Adams, Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Delano family

Description

A black and white image of Laura Delano Adams on the veranda of "Fir Coat," the Adams' family estate on Campobello Island, New Brunswick. Beside her, in a shaded deck chair, is her mother, Ellen Delano Adams, a first cousin to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Ellen Delano and her husband, Fred B. Adams Sr., acquired the property in 1916 and constructed a series of spacious cabins as an Adirondack style summer residence. A small summer colony included the nearby cottages of James and Sarah Roosevelt, as well as Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and the remnants of several large resort hotels which flourished from 1881 to about 1907. When Laura D. Adams died in 2005, her ashes were scattered nearby in Bay of Fundy, by her specific request. She was born on Campobello Island in 1926.
