Sara Delano Roosevelt's Pendant Watch

Jewelry, pendant watch, Cartier, Sarah Delano Roosevelt

A green enameled, pendant gold watch, set with diamonds and sapphires, in solar guilloche pattern, with a diamond star design on the reverse, The watch hangs on a heavy gold and enamel chain, with pearl and diamond accents. The maker's name, Cartier, appears on the watch face.
During the summer of 1941, Laura Delano Adams received the watch as gift from her Great Aunt, Sarah Delano Roosevelt, on what would be the President's mother's last visit to Campobello Island. The moment was described by FDR biographer Geoffrey Ward:

Despite her gallantry, there may have been at least one clue that summer that she might not ever come back to Campobello. One afternoon she had sent for Laura Delano Adams, a favorite grand niece, who was staying in her family's nearby cottage. When the fifteen year old entered, her Aunt Sallie gave her an uncharacteristically extravagant gift, a gold ladies watch covered with diamonds and sapphires, on a heavy gold chain. Laura was dazzled; it was "too feminine for words." she remembered. and she protested a little. Sara insisted that she wonted her to have the watch . It had been very precious to her since her honeymoon sixty years before, she carefully explained, "a gift from your great-uncle James to commemorate the conception of your cousin Franklin."
Sara Roosevelt died at Hyde Park on September 7, 1941, just seven days after returning from Campobello Island.,
